Whip it Up Wednesday ~ Open Herringbone Stitch

Each Wednesday we will choose a stitch to explore and post stitch diagram(s) to help you practice and master each one.

Open Herringbone Stitch ~ also known as Russian Cross, Persian and Fishnet

Steps ~ Work this stitch left to right. Begin in the lower left hand corner and come up through the fabric. Cross over 4 threads and up 2 threads, go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric, cross over 2 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Finally cross 4 threads and down 2 threads, go down through the fabric. Repeat as necessary.

Steps ~ You can also work this stitch in a larger fashion. Work this stitch left to right. Begin in the lower left hand corner and come up through the fabric. Cross over 4 threads and up 4 threads, go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric, cross over 2 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Finally cross 4 threads and down 4 threads, go down through the fabric. Repeat as necessary.

Satin Stitch

Satin Stitch ~ also known as Damask Stitch or Flat Stitch


Work from left to right (also can be worked right to left) top to bottom (or bottom to top). There are different ways to work this stitch. For the best effect be sure to be consistent with your choice throughout your project.



Can also be worked at various lengths and intervals of your choosing.

Plaited Gobelin ~ This stitch can also be called Gobelin Plait and can be completed in a single solid color or a variegated thread to create a different result each and every time.

Steps ~ Start in the lower left hand corner and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 1 thread to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and come up through the fabric. Repeat as necessary for the completion of that row. From behind the fabric go down 3 threads and come up throught the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 1 thread to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and come up throught the fabric. Repeat as necessary for the completion of that row. From behind the fabric go down 3 threads and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 1 thread to the right and go down thorough the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and come up through the fabric. Repeat as necessary for the completion of that row. Continue to work this stitch for as many rows as needed to cover the desired area.

Plaited Gobelin

Roman Stitch ~ This stitch can also be called Branch Stitch although truth be told I think it looks like a tree trunk. It can be completed in a single solid color or a variegated thread to create a different result each and every time.

Steps ~ Start on the left hand side of the fabric and come up through the fabric. Go over 7 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go over 3 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go over 1 thread to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 1 thread and over 3 threads to the left and come up throught the fabric. Go over 7 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go over 3 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go over 1 thread to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 1 thread and over 3 threads to the left and come up throught the fabric. Go over 7 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go over 3 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go over 1 thread to the left and go down through the fabric. Repeat as necessary.

Roman Stitch

Montenegrin ~ This stitch can also be called Montenegrin Cross and can be completed in a single solid color or a variegated thread to create a different result each and every time.

Steps ~ Start in the lower left hand corner and go up 2 threads and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 4 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and over 2 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 2 threads to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and over 2 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and go down through the fabric. Repeat as necessary.

Sofia's Stitch ~ This particular stitch can be completed in a single solid color, a variegated thread, or multiple colors to create a different result each and every time.

Steps ~ Start in the lower left hand corner and go up 6 threads and over 2 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go over 2 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go down 6 threads and over 2 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go up 2 threads and over 4 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 6 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 thread and over 6 threads to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 3 threads and over 1 thread to the right and come up through the fabric. Go up 4 threads and over 4 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. Each Wednesday we will choose a stitch to explore and post stitch diagram(s) to help you practice and master each.

Algerian Eyelet ~ It is important with this stitch to be sure to pull the needle through the center hole to create an open area (hole) in the center of the stitch.

Steps ~ Start at the top center of the stitch and go down 2 threads and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric pull the thread tightly and go up 2 threads and over 2 threads to the right and come up through the fabric. Go over 2 thread and up 2 threads to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric pull the thread tightly and go over 2 threads to the right and come up through the fabric. Go over 2 threads to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric pull the thread tightly and go down 2 threads and over 2 threads to the right and come up through the fabric. Go over 2 threads and up 2 threads to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric, pull the thread tightly and go down 2 threads and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and come down through the fabric. From behind the fabric, pull the thread tightly and go down 2 threads and over 2 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 2 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric, pull the thread tightly and go over 2 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go over 2 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric, pull the thread tightly and go up 2 threads and over 2 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go over 2 threads and down 2 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. Repeat as necessary. Secure end of stitch behind stitch to allow for a clear center "hole".

Plait Stitch ~ This stitch can also be referred to as a Spanish stitch. When completed this stitch resembles a braid.

Steps ~ Start at the lower left hand side of your fabric and go up 2 threads and over 2 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 1 thread to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and come up through the fabric. Repeat as necessary.

Sprat's Head ~ This stitch produces a unique triangle type design that offers a unique twist when creating trees and corners for your projects.

Steps ~ Start in the lower left hand corner and go up 3 threads and over 3 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 3 threads and over 3 threads to the right and come up through the fabric. Go up 3 threads and over 3 threads to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go over 1 thread and down 1 thread to the left and come up through the fabric. Go over 3 threads and down 2 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go up 2 threads and over 1 thread to the left and come up through the fabric. Go over 3 threads and down 2 threads to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go up 1 thread and come through the fabric. Go over 3 threads and down 1 thread to the right and go down through the fabric. Step 1 ~ (white stitches) Start at the top left and come up through the fabric, go up 1 and over 1 to the right and come down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and over 1 thread to the left and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 2 threads to the right and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 3 threads and over 2 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go up 3 threads and over 3 threads to the right and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 4 and over 3 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go up 4 threads and over 4 threads to the right and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 4 threads and over 3 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go up 3 threads and over 3 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 3 threads and over 2 threads to the right and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 2 threads to the right and go down through the fabric. Step 2 ~ (Grey Stitches starting from the last stitch from the white stitches) From the back of the fabric go over 1 thread to the right and come up thought the fabric. Go up 4 threads and over 4 threads to the left and go though the fabric. From the back of the fabric go down 4 threads and over 3 threads to the right and come up through the fabric. Go up 3 threads and over 3 threads to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 3 threads and over 2 threads to the right and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 2 threads and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and over 1 thread to the right and come up through the fabric. Go up 1 thread and over 1 thread to the left and go down through the fabric.

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 as necessary.

Cross Corners Cushion

This stitch can be completed with a single solid thread, multi-color threads, variegated threads or 2 different types of threads (white diagram/grey diagram). This stitch can also be reversed (white diagram can be switched to right to left/top to bottom and the grey diagram can be switched to left to right/bottom to top) to create the mirror image of the diagrams shown above. Be creative and try to add this stitch to your next piece to give it a bit of pizazz!

Open Chevron ~ this type has an open feel with small spaces between top stitches and also between bottom stitches

Steps ~ Start in the lower left hand corner and go over 2 threads to the right and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric go back to the left 1 thread and come up through the fabric. Go up 2 threads and over 2 threads to the right and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric go over 1 thread to the left and come up through the fabric. Go over 2 threads to the right and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric go back to the left 1 thread and come up through the fabric. Go over 2 threads to the right and down 2 threads to the right and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric go back to the left 1 thread and come up through the fabric. Go over 2 threads to the right and go thought the fabric. Repeat as necessary.

Open Chevron

Ray Stitch

Steps ~ Come up throught the fabric on the left hand side. Cross 4 threads and go down 1 thread and pull your needle through. Go back under the fabric and cross 2 threads and go up 1 thread and come up through the fabric. Repeat as necessary.

From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and come up through the fabric. Cross over 2 threads and up 2 threads to the left and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go over 1 thread to the right and come up through the fabric. Cross over and down 1 thread to the right and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric go over 2 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Cross up and over 1 thread to the right and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down 2 threads and come up through the fabric. Cross over and up 1 thread to the left and go through the fabric. Rice Stitch over 2

Barrier Stitch ~ also known as Reverse Bosnia or Fence Stitch

Steps ~ This stitch is worked from left to right. Come up through the fabric on the left hand side and go up 2 threads and go thought the fabric. From under the fabric cross over 2 threads and down 2 threads to the right and come up through the fabric. Repeat as Necessary. Work your way back through the stitch by coming up through the fabric on the bottom right hand side, go up and over 2 threads to the left and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric go down two threads and come up through the fabric. Repeat as necessary.

Two Sided Italian Cross ~ also known as Italian Cross or simply Italian

Steps ~ Come up through the fabric on the lower left hand side, cross 4 threads to the right and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric go over 4 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Cross over 4 threads, go up 4 threads to the right and go through the fabric. From behind the fabric cross over 4 threads and go down 4 threads to the left and come up through the fabric. Go up 4 threads and go down through the fabric. From behind the fabric go over 4 threads and go down 4 threads and come up through the fabric. Cross over 4 threads and go up 4 threads and go down through the fabric. Come up through the fabric and go over 2 threads and go through the fabric. From under the fabric go over 2 threads and up 2 threads. Repeat as necessary.

Steps ~ This stitch can also be created in a larger fashion. Come up through the fabric on the left hand side and go up 4 threads and go through the fabric. From under the fabric go over 4 threads and down 4 threads. Come up through the fabric and go over 4 threads and go through the fabric. From under the fabric go over 4 threads and up 4 threads.
